15 Strange Things Found In Hotel Rooms

By  |

It is not uncommon for people to leave things in their hotel rooms. Some of the most common things that get left are phone chargers, sunglasses, and maybe even a pair of shoes. Those things can easily be replaced or returned. There are other things that are found in hotel rooms that are a lot stranger. This list has some of the most bizarre findings a hotel staff can find. Housekeepers must have interesting jobs if they find weird and creepy, and sometimes cool stuff like this all the time.

Royal Cut Outs  Overseas there are all types of holidays and events that we don’t celebrate here in the states. One of them was the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Apparently it is a big event that attracts people from all over. A British budget hotel chain Premier Inn found a bounty of unwanted “royal products” in one room after the celebration. They included: 18 masks of Queen Elizabeth II, 12 masks of Prince Philip, 36 Union Jack flags and a life-size cut-out of Kate Middleton. Maybe he was selling them and had too much inventory left over.

Botanical Garden A hotel staffer at Jumeirah Frankfurt walked into another world when going to clean a room in a hotel in Doha, Dubai. He went to make up the room after a guest checked out only too find the room was covered with plant life. The hotel staffer said “that reminded us more of a botanical garden than a hotel room.” Large palm trees, and flowers filled the room. There was even a small water fountain on the bedside table. How did the guest get all of this in the room without no one noticing?

False Teeth It is important that you check your bags for everything before you leave a hotel. Small objects that you need can mysteriously be left behind. For some people their teeth are included on that list of this they forget. I don’t know how people forget their teeth but it must be a common thing. Both Premier Inn and the Royal Cliff Hotel have found leftover dentures. I hope the owner had spares.

A Live turtle If you are apart of the house keeping crew at a hotel, I guess one of the last things you’d expect to see in a live animal. Here is a story of one housekeeper at the Banyan Tree Macau finding a turtle. “A guest left behind a turtle in their room and it ended up wandering the guest corridors where a room attendant almost stumbled on him.” The room attendant immediately brought him down to the housekeeping office where they found a glass vase to serve as a turtle tank. They named him Felly and brought another turtle so he wouldn’t be lonely.

Luggage It’s weird to walk into a room after the guest checked out and still see their luggage there. No one can be in that much of a hurry that they forget everything that they came with. It seems like a fishy scenario. Most hotels either try to mail the luggage to the owner, send it to the airport or, just throw it away.

Uniforms  This one is a little weird. In London, Premier Inn’s team members found a number of uniforms in a room one summer. There was a flight attendant’s uniform, nun’s habit and Olympic volunteer’s uniform. There could be a number of reasons why this person had all these disguises and none of them are good. Whatever they did, must of been a success because the only thing that was caught were the uniforms.

Wedding Gown  It is not uncommon for people to travel way from home to have their wedding. It is not uncommon for the bride and groom to leave for their honey moon right after they said “I do.” What is uncommon is for the bride to leave her wedding gown in the hotel room when they leave. After a newlywed couple checked out of Jumeirah Dhevanafushi in the Maldives, a housekeeper found a wedding gown had been left behind. Maybe the honeymoon didn’t go as planned.

Tickets to the Olympics  One hotel guest was probably kicking himself in the butt once he realized what he left in his hotel room. During the London Olympics a guest left behind tickets to one of the hottest events of the London Olympics. He was either very forgetful, or had more money than brains. Those tickets cost about $2,577. I can imagine his face when he got to the gate and had not ticket to get in.

Cash It is not unusual to find some pocket change left behind in a hotel room. Maybe even a dollar or two. Anything over $100 is a mistake and was not meant to be left there. A maid at London’s Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel found £500 ($805) in a room. The hotel managed to track down the guest and return the cash. The guest was so ecstatic they decided to tip the honest maid with the money she found.

Prosthetic Leg There are so many expressions about your legs, “I got my sea legs,” or “you left your legs at home” are some. The latter became more than just a figure of speech when a guest really left his leg in a room at the Chisos Mountain Lodge in Big Bend National Park, Texas. A guest checked out without his prosthetic leg. Lodge staff tracked the man down while puzzling how he made his way out of the hotel. It turned out the man had two spare legs.

Blow Up Doll This story is a little disturbing. A hotel attendant recalls, “There was this one guy who stayed at least one night every week and he always requested the same room. We thought he was maybe making drug deals or something so we searched the room after he checked out one day. Turns out he was hiding a blow-up doll under the mattresses. We threw it away and he only came back once after that. I kinda felt bad for him.”

More Animals At one hotel, the house keeping staff found cats. That’s right , cats, everywhere. The guest left a $100 tip with a note that said, “Thanks for taking care of these guys, be back in a week.” She didn’t come back. In another case a guest had a bathroom full of ducklings. The guest said their mother died and she started to take care of them herself. The ducklings were removed from the room and were kept in someone’s office till the right people came to collect them.

A Dead Body  Surprisingly, I feel like this happens more than we think. There could be a couple of reasons why a dead body can be found in a hotel room. It could be a crime scene, someone could of died of a heart attack, or ninjas could have crept in the room and offed the guy. That last one seems a little far fetched. In a hotel in New Jersey the body of a dead woman was found under the mattress. The body was discovered by the next occupant of the room, which makes me believe that the staff didn’t clean that room. Maybe they were in on the murder.

Rearranged Furniture  This is a funny one. A hotel attendant tells their story of some rearranged furniture. “I was working at a luxury hotel and we had a fairly big name band staying with us. There were no noise complaints, and they seemed to be perfect tenants. When they left and we went to clean the room, every single piece of furniture was nailed to the ceiling in roughly the same configuration that it had been on the floor. I found it to be quite amusing. Management didn’t.”

Mayonnaise This is just nasty and tasteless. People find it amusing to play pranks on the housekeeping staff of hotels. That is just cruel. Some pranks are harmless and quite funny, others are just horrible. There was one case at the Ibis Hotel in Sydney. The residents had decided to cover the floor in the bathroom with mayonnaise, and the same with the mirrors. I can only imagine how long that clean up took.
